Ever wanted to see a lion up close without having to run for your life? Or, admire an elephant without worrying about it charging at you like a Danfo driver in Lagos traffic?
Well, my friend, that is why zoos in Nigeria exist! Believe it or not, Nigeria has some pretty interesting zoos where you can experience wildlife without leaving the comfort of civilization.
Hey, Nigerian zoos are not the size of Kruger National Park in South Africa, and they don’t have the billionaire-level luxury of Dubai’s safari parks. What we do have, however, are places where you can see wild animals, have a fun day out, and learn a thing or two about nature.
Plus, they make for great Instagram pictures (don’t get too close to the cages, or you might become part of the exhibit).
Let me take you on a trip around the most interesting zoos in Nigeria, and while at it, I will throw in some must-visit tourist spots because, my dear Nigerian traveler, our country has a lot more to offer than just owambe parties and jollof rice.

1. Jos Wildlife Park – The OG of Zoos in Nigerian
Jos Wildlife Park is what you get when you mix a zoo with a game reserve and add a sprinkle of history. Located in Plateau State, this place has been around since 1972, making it one of Nigeria’s oldest wildlife parks.
It is home to lions, pythons, baboons, crocodiles, and even ostriches that look like they have beef with everyone. The park is large, peaceful, and perfect for a weekend getaway. Plus, the weather in Jos is cool all year round, so you won’t be sweating like you just finished a plate of extra-spicy suya.
2. National Children’s Park and Zoo, Abuja – Where Animals and Playgrounds Mix
Abuja people, gather here! If you’re looking for a place where kids can run wild while also learning about animals, this is it. The National Children’s Park and Zoo is not as big as Jos Wildlife Park, but its serene environment makes up for it.
You will find monkeys, donkeys, camels, and even peacocks strutting around like they own the place. And since it is in Abuja, you can end your trip with a visit to Jabi Lake or Zuma Rock for extra adventure.
3. University of Ibadan Zoo – The One That Feels Like a School Excursion
If you went to school in the Southwest, chances are your teachers dragged you to UI Zoo at least once. This zoo, inside Nigeria’s premier university, is one of the best-maintained in the country.
It has lions, hyenas, snakes, and even chimpanzees who know how to pose for pictures better than some Instagram influencers. A visit here is a mix of nostalgia and fun, and if you are lucky, you might meet students who are more interested in taking selfies than studying.
4. Port Harcourt Zoo – Small but Mighty
Port Harcourt Zoo may not be the biggest, but it has enough animals to make your trip worthwhile. Located in Trans Amadi, this zoo has lions, pythons, monkeys, and even a stubborn tortoise that refuses to move (probably the chairman of the animal association). It is a nice place for family outings, and after visiting, you can explore the lively city of PH – maybe enjoy fresh bole and fish at Mile 3?
5. Imo State Zoological Garden – The Hidden Gem
Now, if you are in the Southeast and looking for a zoo, the Imo State Zoological Garden should be on your list. It is not the biggest or most popular, but it is peaceful and has many animals to see.
Plus, it is a great excuse to explore Owerri, the “entertainment capital” of the East—because a trip to Owerri is never complete without some nightlife fun!
Beyond Zoos: Other Must-See Tourist Spots in Nigeria
Since we are already talking about exploring Nigeria, let’s not stop at zoos. There is so much to see in this country beyond traffic and fuel queues. Here are some places you should add to your bucket list:
1. Yankari Game Reserve – The Real Safari Experience
If you want to see wild animals in their natural habitat instead of inside a cage, then forget about zoos and head straight to Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi. This is where you will find elephants, hippos, antelopes, and even leopards (don’t worry, they won’t chase you).
There are also natural warm springs, so bring your swimsuit and enjoy a dip in Wikki Warm Spring. It is like taking a bath in warm, crystal-clear water straight from nature’s tap.
2. Erin Ijesha Waterfall –Nature is Beautiful
If you love adventure, Erin Ijesha Waterfall in Osun State should be on your list. It is a seven-step waterfall, meaning you can climb up different levels like you are playing Super Mario. The higher you go, the cooler and fresher the water gets. Just be ready to sweat because the hike is no joke.
3. Idanre Hills – Where Fitness and Tourism Meet
Want to test your stamina? Climb Idanre Hills in Ondo State. This place has over 600 steps, and by the time you reach the top, you’ll know whether you need to hit the gym or not. But the view from up there? Worth it!
4. Lekki Conservation Centre – For the Instagram-Worthy Canopy Walk
In Lagos and need a break from traffic? Visit Lekki Conservation Centre and take a walk on Africa’s longest canopy walkway. It’s high up, it is shaky, and it is not for the faint of heart.
But if you are brave enough, the view is amazing. Just watch out for the monkeys. They have zero respect and might try to steal your snacks.
5. Obudu Mountain Resort – For That Abroad Feeling
Obudu in Cross River is Nigeria’s little piece of paradise. Cool weather, beautiful mountain views, and cable cars? Say no more! It is perfect for honeymooners, solo travelers, and anyone who just wants to escape Nigeria’s heat for a bit.
Final Words: Explore Nigeria!
Nigeria may not have Disneyland, but we have enough natural wonders and interesting places to keep your weekends exciting. Whether it is visiting a zoo, hiking a hill, or swimming in a waterfall, there is something for everyone. So, dear Nigerian tourist, step out of your comfort zone and start exploring!
And if you do visit any of these places, don’t forget to take pictures. Not just for the memories, but also so you can prove to your friends that you actually left your house!
